So there I was, reading Men's Health Magazine (hey, it has great food info for a dieting husband. . . okay, and the occasional eye candy), when I ran across an article discussing soy intake and how even moderate amounts taken consistently over time can cause VERY high estrogen levels and breast growth in men. The article had a blurb about infant formula made with soy and how it can cause immunodeficiency in babies along with high estrogen levels in young males. To say that I thought this was disturbing would be putting things mildly. I think that parents hear "soy" and think that the super-food is what is best for their growing infant. Anyways, here are a couple of articles I found on the matter:

From what I understand, this is old news. I didn't know it though, so I am sharing.
Wow...I will mention this to my sister. She is trying so hard to nurse the twins, but has had to supplement because she isn't making enough. She has tried everything, even talked with June. So she is giving them soy based formula...I hope that it doesn't hurt them. Thats scary!! Thanks for the info.
ReplyDeleteMakes me so glad I was able to nurse the first year and still am. Ugh!
ReplyDeleteI've been trying to comment on your last two blogs for days but it was acting up on me just on your page for some weird reason! Anywho, I am SO glad that baby bean seems to be doing healthy in there!
*stick and grow baby, stick and grow!*
oh you are so right about the parents buying soy formula because they think it's better. we have moms coming inot WIC demanding it because they think "it's more natural" WTF, seriously??? anyhow, i didn't realize all that about soy either until a few months ago whenever a cowroker talked to me about it.
ReplyDeleteand i had never heard of the Weston Price way of eating until i joined the local homebirthing group. interesting stuff!!
