Cricket?

I think I have thought of a pet for Lea that Roscoe won't immediately kill. . . or at least it will be tiny enough that we can hide it from him and it won't smell strongly enough for him to ever be the wiser. A pet cricket! We can get the setup and cricket at the pet store, they're easy to care for, and they all look alike, so Lea will not notice when his little life is over and we replace him. They don't live very long and I don't want her heart to break every 8 to 10 weeks.

I am a strong believer that pets teach kids so much about life. I just couldn't think of a pet that Ros wouldn't use to teach her about dissection. . .

Hmmm

  1. a cricket is a neat idea! as you said, they are easy to replace and also inexpensive to do so. go for it!

though i also thought of Sea Monkeys and hermit crabs... but those could be when she is a bit older.

  3. *Update*
I got the crickets (3 of them) and Roscoe FREAKED out. It was as bad as when we brought home the mice. He is roaming he house whining and shaking and trying to bust into the little cage. *sigh* This is ridiculous. What a horrible creature. They are baby bugs! They aren't even a half inch long!

Queen Bee- Hermit crabs! That's a good idea, though he would probably still sense them with his anti-life radar.

Christen-- I would LOVE a small fuzzy creature. I love rodents and grew up with a bedroom full of cages. Unfortunately, I have a 5 year old terrier (terrorist?) who kills EVERYTHING. Several mutilated chickens (my mom's) and slaughtered small animals later, we have learned that we apparently can't even keep bugs in our house.

  4. Crickets! LOL I hope Roscoe spares their lives although they will be easy to replace without Lea really noticing.

Hermit crabs or Sea Monkeys are a really good idea!

  5. Jessi-- Tell me what its like to have a good dog. It's just been so long since I've owned one ;). No, I love my stinking old bad dog. He protects me against birds, cats, other dogs, people, cars, and busses while we are on our walks. I mean, what would I do without that kind of loyalty?

  6. oh, Roscoe.

maybe he has a super sensitive sense of hearing and all other squeaks and chirps drive him nuts? (i am totally reaching here to give him the benefit of the doubt ;) )

wonder what he would think of a little fish swimming around in a fish bowl or something?
